The deep trance, the remarkable sleep, the powerful healing, the unexplained force, a supernatural power – all these are just a sample of explanations from my clients and other professionals, of what makes up hypnosis and hypnotherapy. You could argue that it is a combination of all these factors, and possibly more we do not understand, and you would not be far wrong. Hopefully I can draw a picture for you here.

What is Hypnosis?

In simple terms, hypnosis is the word used to describe a state enhanced by mental and physical relaxation in which a person’s mind remains calm, concentrated and aware, while their body becomes completely relaxed. The psycho-physiological effects of hypnosis usual involve changes in the heart rate, respiratory rhythm, muscle tension, arterial blood pressure and oxygen consumption, similar to those that occur in yoga, relaxation training and other meditative processes. Some of my clients that practice Yoga long-term have been positively surprised by the relaxation power produced after only one hour of hypnotherapy. People in hypnosis experience a tremendous sense of wellbeing and peace of mind, and while in this state, the mind is more receptive to positive suggestion. It is then possible to access areas of the mind that are beyond the normal level of consciousness. We refer to it as the subconscious part of the mind that deals with automatic functions of our body, including the autonomic nervous system, but it is also a place where we keep a record of all our memories and experiences. This state of mind may be brought about either by oneself using self-hypnosis or with the help of another person. If this other person is a trained therapist, who uses hypnosis as a therapeutic tool, then this process is called ‘hypnotherapy’.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the treatment of emotional and psychological disorders, including unwanted habits and undesirable feelings, through the use of hypnosis by a trained professional. The aim of such therapy is to assist people in finding meaningful alternatives to their present unsatisfactory ways of thinking, feeling or behaving.

In my practice I utilise two types of therapy – advanced suggestion hypnotherapy and advanced structured hypnotherapy. The first technique I apply primarily to treat smoking habits, which in the majority of cases have been formed without the presence of psychological trauma. This is delivered in a one-hour intensive therapy session that follows a precise set of protocols.
The second technique I use to apply to any problem that has resulted from psychological trauma, such as stress, anxiety, fear, phobia, weight issues, insomnia or others. This is delivered in 3 to 5 sessions and it involves gaining access to the subconscious mind.

I hope this has given you a better idea of what hypnosis and hypnotherapy are and that you can experience for yourself the powerful effect that this method can deliver, either for simple relaxation or in treating some of the more severe mental disturbances.
