Hypnotherapy for who?

Those who have not experienced the power of hypnosis might be skeptical, but those who were cured by it will swear by its results and the change that it has brought to their lives. So, let’s see who can be hypnotised and what benefits you might gain.

There are many common concerns about hypnosis. Some people think that they will ‘lose control’ while in a hypnotic state; others think that it is simply impossible for them to be hypnotized. Those who have not experienced the power of hypnosis might be skeptical, but those who were cured by it will swear by its results and the change that it has brought to their lives. So, let’s see who can be hypnotised and what benefits you might gain.

Who can be hypnotised?

The answer to this question is…. virtually everyone! Anyone who wants to experience hypnosis and is willing to follow simple instructions will go into hypnosis. However, if someone does not want to be hypnotised, they will not! Different hypnotisability levels have been observed, which might depend on individual differences. Some people will experience a very deep state of relaxation, while others might be just moderately hypnotisable.

So what actual level of trance is required in order for the therapy to be successful?
Although there remains some disagreement over the answer, most researchers suggest that the actual level or depth of trance experienced does not correlate positively with the therapy results. In other words, deeper hypnosis does not indicate a higher probability of fixing ‘the problem’.

The most common concern that I hear from my clients is that they are worried about a lack of control while under hypnosis. You will certainly not ‘lose control’. Regardless of how deep you may go into hypnosis and however passive you may appear to be, you will still be in full control of the situation. Also, a hypnotised person cannot be made to do anything against their usual ethical or moral judgement.

Who may benefit?

Although in our Smoke Free Lady practice we specialise mainly in therapy for stop smoking, weight management, stress, anxiety, fears and phobias for women, the list of treatable problems is endless and also applicable to men. So again, the answer to this question is, virtually everyone! Given that hypnotherapy can be utilised to access a person’s inner potential and that probably no one is really performing to their actual potential, then this answer is literally true. However, it is not just potential but also an individual’s inner resources that, supported by hypnotherapy, can elevate the problem. Therefore, if you think about it, the list of issues that can be treated by hypnotherapy is very long. It certainly includes those already mentioned above, plus other habits and addictions that can negatively impact on our daily living, such as overeating, alcoholism, unhealthy sleep patterns, lack of confidence and low self-esteem, public speaking, allergies, migraines, and even irritable bowel syndrome (as recommended by the NHS). Hypnotherapy has been used, with great results, in sporting and artistic performance enhancement. Hypnotic ‘sleep’ has been also used in surgery, in situations where normal anaesthetics have not been practical.

There are many other areas of human suffering for which hypnotherapy can be used but there are also cases, especially in our practice, that we would refer to a specialist. These are clinical depression, suicidal persons, and cases of schizophrenia that include positive symptoms, such as delusion and hallucination.

Hypnotherapy can be extraordinarily effective if the right ingredients are present, such as the qualified and experienced therapist, client commitment, the therapeutic alliance and the reliable techniques.
